School Tour:

Date: 28/05/18 - Monday the 28th of May.
Cost: €20 (€15 for excursions and €5 for bus)

Plan:

We will be leaving school promptly after the bell goes at about 8.45am. Make sure kids are on time. We will then get the bus to Dublinia. After Dublinia we will be walking to the Viking Splash Tour. After this we will be having lunch in St. Patrick's Park. We will be back in school at around 2pm.

Children are to do 3/4 paragraphs describing Castletaggart:

1. Introduction:
- Short summary of story.
- Short description of Characters.
- Explaining what you are writing about.

2. Description of town:
- What it looks like.
- What it smells and sounds like.
- What you feel about the town.

3. Description of people:
- What they look like.
- How they feel.

4. Concluding line/ paragraph.

English Reading: Ch 15. Under the Hawthorn Tree

English Writing: Sheet on Ch. 15 Under the Hawthorn Tree (full sentences)

English Writing (homework copy): Children are to write an argument that Michael had to/ did not have to kill Animals in Under The Hawthorn Tree.

Structure of Argument: Introduction paragraph, Two paragraphs with arguments and evidence to back them up and a conclusion paragraph.

Introduction:
- Describe Michael.
- Describe Under The Hawthorn Tree.
- Explain the argument (for killing animals/ against)
- "Please read on and you will find out why I believe that Michael needed/ did not need to kill animals"

Arguments:
Needed to kill:                                                 Did not need to kill:
1. Survival (food)                                            1. Plenty of other options. (nuts, fruit, etc.)
2. Survival (danger - rabid dogs)                    2. Animal rights - who gave Michael the right to kill?
3. Balanced diet.     

(children can do a counter argument paragraph also if they want)                                       

Conclusion:
- Re-cap over the points you have made.
- Finish off writing.

Important features to be included in the children's writing:
- Description of scene (3/ 4 sentence introduction to script)
- Name of person speaking at start of sentence.
- What the person says after colon (:)
-  Actions in brackets.

Example: 
SETTING:
After escaping prison the thief found a gun.  Another prisoner asked him for help.

Thief:      (Lauging) haha.  Finally I am out.  Now I can go and steal some things (walking to the                          door)

Prisoner: (shouting) Wait.  Don´t forget me. (shaking the bars).

Thief:     (Turns to speak) Sorry friend, I have to go alone. (turns to the door).

Prisoner: (shakes the bars and shouts). No. We were supposed to be partners.

Important features to be included in the children's writing:
- More than 1 copy page.
- Paragraphs.

- Spelling (As good as possible) 
- Descriptive language.
- Describing feelings and emotions.

* Describe the storm.
